Somiedo Natural Park

La Corte > Setting

Declared a natural park in 1988 and a biosphere reserve in 2000 by Unesco, Somiedo is nature at its purest. Its lofty summits, lakes, woods, wild land and sparse population make it a privileged retreat for endangered species such as the brown bear, and Somosiedo is actually one of the very few places in Europe where these wild bears can still be seen.

There are four main valleys, one for each of Somiedo’s four major rivers: the Pigüeña (which runs close to the hotel), the Valle, the Somiedo and the Saliencia. There are also a large number of spectacularly beautiful lakes and lagoons, such as the Llago Bono ("Good Lake”) near the hotel in Villar de Vildas, a restricted-access area due to its high ecological value.

Somiedo is also home to culture and tradition, with its “vaqueiros de alzada” (nomadic cowherds), “brañas” (mountain grasslands) and “cabañas de teito” (thatched stone huts). Another highlight is the local cuisine, including "pote de berzas" (cabbage, chorizo and butterbean stew), "Xata Roxa" beef and traditional desserts.
